Road Construction to Restart to Complete $4.2 Million Improvement of Route 29 in Chester County
King of Prussia – The final resurfacing of the newly widened stretch of Route 29
(Morehall Road) between Yellow Springs Road and Phoenixville Pike/Charlestown Road in East Whiteland and
Charlestown townships, Chester County, will start Wednesday (Aug. 20), the Pennsylvania Department of
Transportation said today.
The paving of Route 29 (Morehall Road) and a portion of Charlestown Road is one of the
last operations remaining to complete the $4.2 million project to improve travel and reduce congestion
along this congested corridor.
Crews will mill or remove the old riding surface from Route 29 (Morehall Road) and
Charlestown Road on Wednesday and Thursday (Aug. 20-21) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and then pave the roadways
on Tuesday, Aug. 26 through Thursday, Aug. 28 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning.
Motorists are advised to allow additional time for travel during the milling and paving
operations because slowdowns may occur. The contractor’s schedule is weather dependent.
Once paving is completed, the contractor will work weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to
complete remaining items of work, including guide rail installation and traffic signal adjustments. The
project is expected to finish in mid-September.
PennDOT’s contractor widened Route 29 (Morehall Road) to provide an additional northbound
and southbound travel lane. This stretch of Route 29 carries 15,000 vehicles a day.
The improvements also included 5-foot wide shoulders; intersection upgrades; new traffic
signals at the intersections of Yellow Springs Road/Warner Lane, Whitehorse Road and Charlestown Road/Phoenixville
Pike; and storm water management facilities.
In addition, crews widened Charlestown Road from Phoenixville Pike to just south of the
Charlestown Elementary School to provide an additional through lane in each direction and shoulders; widened
Phoenixville Pike east of Charlestown Road to provide an additional westbound left turn lane; widened Phoenixville
Pike west of Charlestown Road to provide a gore area opposite the dual left turn lanes; and widened Yellow Springs
Road to add an exclusive right turn lane.
Allan A. Myers, LP of Worcester, Montgomery County, is the general contractor on the $4,237,948
contract.
