Road Construction to Restart to Complete $4.2 Million Improvement of Route 29 in Chester County

King of Prussia – With the onset of spring approaching, construction crews will restart work Monday (March 17) to widen and improve Route 29 (Morehall Road) between Yellow Springs Road and Phoenixville Pike/Charlestown Road in East Whiteland and Charlestown townships, Chester County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said today.

Under a $4.2 million improvement project, PennDOT’s contractor is widening Route 29 (Morehall Road) to provide an additional northbound and southbound travel lane to enhance traffic flow and reduce congestion. This stretch of Route 29 carries 15,000 vehicles day.

The improvements being made on Route 29 (Morehall Road) also include five-foot wide shoulders; intersection upgrades and new signals at Yellow Springs Road/Warner Lane, Whitehorse Road and Charlestown Road/Phoenixville Pike; and storm water management facilities.

PennDOT’s contractor also is widening Charlestown Road from Phoenixville Pike to just south of the Charlestown Elementary School to provide an additional through lane in each direction and shoulders; widening Phoenixville Pike east of Charlestown Road to provide an additional westbound left turn lane; widening Phoenixville Pike west of Charlestown Road to provide a gore area opposite the dual left turn lanes; and widening Yellow Springs Road to add an exclusive right turn lane.

From mid-March through late June, motorists may face lane closures and slowdowns on the following roads weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and weeknights from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. for road construction and drainage installation:

  • Route 29 (Morehall Road) between Yellow Springs Road and Phoenixville Pike;
  • Phoenixville Pike/State Road between Route 29 (Morehall Road) and Dickson Drive;
  • Charlestown Road between Phoenixville Pike and Hollow Road; and
  • Yellow Springs Road between Route 29 (Morehall Road) and Elbrooke Lane.

The Route 29 improvement project is scheduled to finish in the late summer or early fall. Allan A. Myers, LP of Worcester, Montgomery County, is the general contractor on the $4,237,948 contract.
