Sarabella Firkin, a scout from Troop 4321 presented a Silver Award project proposal. Firkin proposes building a bird garden at Charlestown Park. The bird garden would consist of a bird bath, bird feeder, bird house, and plantings. Additionally, there would be a plan for cleaning and maintaining the bird bath and refilling the bird feeders.
Kane inquired about the garden location. A location has yet to be determined, but likely near a path or benches. Mount suggested within the unimproved meadow at the southwest corner of the park.
Ammerman asked about the bird bath structure and further suggested considering construction that would be resilient to wind.
Barbera requested more information regarding the sustainability plan. Firkin mentioned their proximity to the park allows for them to regularly maintain the items in the garden. Kane suggested planning to hand the project maintenance down through the troop.
Barbera suggested that the bird feeders be planned with protection from squirrels.
Firkin will enhance the proposal with a location, size and updated list of what will be included in the garden. The updated proposal will be presented at a future meeting.
Ammerman provided the board with an update after visiting the open well near the Pickering Dam Trail. Due to the size, a steel plate is not feasible. Ammerman recommended filling with gravel or fill. Additional suggestions were to cover with metal grating or fallen trees. Kane will request Heleniak and Koenig take over deciding on next steps.
Mount updated the board regarding next steps on the bridge at Charlestown Park. The township engineer has reviewed the bridge and will provide information to determine next steps.
Ammerman provided the board with a proposal for kiosks that would be placed at trailheads and Charlestown Park. The cost per kiosk is estimated to be under $500 and each kiosk could be constructed within two days. Ammerman shared an example of waterproof signage that would be installed in the kiosks and an image of an example kiosk.
Adjournment was at 7:54 p.m.
